†Please note: We make our stuff sacs big enough to allow fairly easy stuffing rather than reducing the bags to the tightest minimum.

‡Please note: The optional HS2 outer is a complete extra outer shell, with seams taped for weatherproofness. The extra layer of fabric adds considerably to the weight and bulk of the basic bag. It increases the weatherproof qualities of the bag in mountain or Arctic situations, but it is not a substitute for a proper bivvy bag when sleeping out in the rain.

*Please note: For all length or width options, we change the amount of downfill to keep the warmth (TOT) the same.

Description

Ultralights for the mountains are the first words we put to the Hispar sleeping bags and it's hard to find a better way to describe them. Starting with our superlight MX inner fabric and the pared-down design features of the Minim range, we have added some of the extra elements from the Baltoro/Diamir bags to bring these new bags up to mountain specifications, while keeping weight to a minimum.

The combination of this design with the exceptional quality of our 950 down almost sends the new Hispar range off the scale for warmth/weight performance

  • The straight-wall baffle system (as used on the Minimus) is the lightest available.
  • The close-fitting mummy hood borrowed from the high-performance bags brings a snug protective feel.
  • A short zip with a double draft tube is standard on these bags (a zip is necessary with a mummy hood).
  • Side block baffles have been inserted to prevent down shifting between top and base.
  • The outer V baffle at each side protects the side seams and increases the inner/outer differential to allow the down full loft.
  • A simple internal collar completes the technical specifications.

The weights of the Hispar bags are graphic evidence of the effectiveness of this specific design. With the performance of our 950 down these bags deliver exceptional levels of warmth per gram.

Picture shows Hispar 600, Hispar 400 is slimmer.

Technical

Water-resistant Drishell outer fabric (weight: 54 gsm)

Ripstop nylon with an ultralight coating: achieves total windblock, along with high breathability and superior water resistance. Superbly efficient for a very light overall fabric weight. Order samples of this fabric & just pay the postage.

Superlight MX fabric (weight: 32 gsm)

A mini-ripstop nylon with excellent tear strength, MX is the pick of the superfine 15 denier downproof materials. We have tested lighter fabrics, but most have had significant drawbacks, while our confidence in MX is based on several years of extensive use in both our ultralight and our high mountain gear. Order samples of this fabric & just pay the postage.

Sleeping Bag Zips

  • No zip: The standard design on our lightest bags with open hoods. The simplest/lightest system which is a must for adventure racers. Up to 140gm (5oz) lighter than a full zip with draft tube.
  • Full zips: Full zip bags ventilate well, so they can be used over a wider range of temperatures.
  • Short Zips: Short zips are lighter and pack smaller than full zips. A short zip & draft tube is about 85gm (3oz) lighter than the full version.
  • Our full briefing on sleeping bag zips.

950 Fillpower Down

A newcomer to our range. European goose of rare quality. A high value alternative at the top levels of performance. More on our down insulation.

Construction

This bag has an insulating straight wall baffle system throughout (no straight-through stitching). Straight wall is the lightest of all baffle systems. In cross section it looks like this:

Side V channels, and double draft tubes behind the zip optimise insulation.
More on sleeping bag construction.

Waterproof HS2 outer fabric (weight: 88 gsm)

HS2 is PHD's high-spec 2-layer ripstop for waterproof outers on our down. It is light enough to be the optional taped shell on our sleeping bags and tough enough for expedition use in our Omega clothing. HS2 is completely waterproof (when the seams are taped) and offers excellent breathability. Order samples of this fabric & just pay the postage.

Reviews

"This has to be the best sleeping bag I've ever used in every respect. It weighs 770g and its warm as a very warm thing (good to -9). It's not cheap but then you get what you pay for when it comes to sleeping bags. PHD are a very small company but they beat the socks off the big guys."
Phil Newby, registered BAIML International Mountain Leader.

"I can honestly say I've never slept better whilst camping, even in the warm! I have already recommended your sleeping bags to a number of people. Many thanks for helping make my trip so special"
Andy Ladd, Iceland. 5 nights at -20C.

"I'm over the moon to say the least. The build quality is excellent and I'm picking the bag up every hour to try and convince my brain that it actually is that light. Consider me a totally satisfied customer, please pass my thanks on to the team."
Rory Abbott.

"I am absolutely convinced about the fantastic quality of your product. It was amazing not to worry about the cold at any time."
Kathrin Goretzki.

"I have a new Hispar 400 which is proving to be very good indeed."
Tim Rodgers.

"I have one of your Hispar Bags and think they are amazing."
Richard Bishop.

"In September, I had the opportunity to use my Hispar 400 bag in Iceland. The bag was so warm that I didn't need to close the zipper!"
Volker Junge.

"Having ordered a Hispar from you last month and testing it wild camping in North Wales to around -2 degrees, I have to admit that the bag is brilliant! I was toasty while my climbing partner shivered! Thank you for the excellent gear and hopefully my down jacket will be falling apart soon so I can justify replacing it with one of yours!"
Alistair Ross.
