Where Down comes from
The majority of the world’s down comes from the Far East, China being by far the biggest source. Times are changing, but China still has a big influence on the world price. In the last 20 years China has moved from supplying the world with the raw product (feathers and down) right through to making and supplying the finished article (e.g. sleeping bags).
There are also all grades of down in the rest of the world, Europe, North and South America, even the Caribbean. European down has a very good reputation, mostly because of the excellent goose downs from eastern Europe, (Poland and Hungary). There is good duck down available from Europe, and also a great deal of cheap commercial product from young birds bred quickly for eating.
