Description:

Get all-year-round versatility by using an Overbag with your light inner bag. Only carry the lightest sleep system you need.  In summer just pack your lightest bag, in autumn and spring, pack just the warmest, and then in winter take both bags.

Overbags (where one sleeping bag is used around another) are a firm favourite of PHD’s. They were the starting-point for our Sleep Systems framework, and kicked off a new approach to layering down gear to sleep in. As well as going over the top of your main bag, Overbags can be used on their own, resulting in a superbly versatile modular system to cover a huge range of temperatures.

The Greenlandic Overbag is cut wide enough to fit correctly (allowing full lofting) over four of our range of Greenlandic semi-rectangular bags (specifically the 150, 200, 300 & 400 bags) and extends the potential of these roomy sleeping bags. Used this way, the Overbag adds a massive 23°C of warmth to the bag it covers. Or, used alone, it is a -5°C sleeping bag in its own right.

As with all PHD sleeping bags, the Greenlandic Overbag is made to order, so we can offer plenty of options. To begin with, a combination of 4 different lengths and 4 different widths allows you to get the perfect fit. Primarily this is because poor sizing compromises insulation, but it also means that you carry only what’s necessary.

The outer fabric is water-resistant Ultrashell (condensation can be very heavy inside a tent or bivi) and, because dampness at the foot of a bag is so often the consequence of touching the inside of a tent, an optional waterproof foot cover can be specified for extra protection. This can be sewn on or – so you can detach it and strip the bag right down for super-minimalist overnights – we can make it stud-on: it’s up to you.

The optional waterproof Dri-LX outer provides an extra seam-sealed outer shell to the bag. While a shelled sleeping bag is not designed to be used alone in heavy rain (the hood area is open to the elements) the shell does protect the bag when it is used outdoors without a tent, for example in a snow-hole or under a tarp.

Ultralight 7X fabric (weight: 22 gsm)

7X is our new sheer-light 7 denier fabric. An exquisitely fine rip-stop nylon, 7X is incredibly light, highly wind-resistant and has first-rate down proofing. This fabric helps us create the very lightest of gear in the PHD range. Of course the lighter the fabric the lighter the sleeping bag or down clothing, and the less space it takes up in your rucksack. This fabric is so light it actually helps to allow even greater lofting of the down too.

Dri-LX (weight: 64 gsm)

At just 64gsm, Dri-LX is our lightest 2-layer breathable waterproof rip-stop nylon fabric. Its remarkably low weight not only makes for a lighter load, but also reduces pack size. Its excellent waterproofing qualities are in part due to how it can be taped at the seams to create a waterproof shell for sleeping bags and clothing.

Ultrashell (weight: 40 gsm)

One of the lightest of PHD's coated materials. This ripstop nylon provides complete wind block and good water resistance at minimal weight. Ultrashell gives an excellent upgrade to performance with very little weight penalty.

Sleeping bag zips

  • No zip: The standard design on our lightest bags with open hoods. The simplest/lightest system which is a must for adventure racers. Up to 140gm (5oz) lighter than a full zip with draft tube.
  • Full zips: Full zip bags ventilate well, so they can be used over a wider range of temperatures.
  • Short zips: Short zips are lighter and pack smaller than full zips. A short zip & draft tube is up to 85gm (3oz) lighter than the full version.

Construction

This bag has an insulating straight wall baffle system throughout (no straight-through stitching). Straight wall is the lightest of all baffle sytems. In cross section it looks like this:
