Description

Climbing in Arctic Norway, we experienced first-hand the warmth benefit of the Alpine Ultra Jacket and its key feature of extreme lightness. When you don't need it, it stows super small. When you do need it, it’s extra warm. Now we can, why not go one better and make it even lighter

Made in our 7X fabric, we’ve created our lightest ever Alpine Ultra Jacket.

The Alpine Ultra has been acclaimed as the perfect Alpine Jacket, but it's won friends in the Himalayas too as the ideal combination of light and warm. That lightness is its unique ace card: when it's not needed it can be packed down to nothing and carried in your pack.

Facing an early morning start, a cold wind high up, even an unexpected bivvy: whenever you're going to need extra warmth on your peak, it doesn't come any lighter than the Alpine Ultra. It's lighter than fleece, much warmer, packs a lot smaller and has a 100% windproof outer too.

Note: The optional hood needs to be ordered at the same time as the jacket.

Only available until 30 June 2018 as part of our Summer Lightning Collection 2018.

Technical

Ultralight 7X fabric (weight: 22 gsm)

7X is our new sheer-light 7 denier fabric. An exquisitely fine rip-stop nylon, 7X is incredibly light, highly wind-resistant and has first-rate down proofing. This fabric helps us create the very lightest of gear in the PHD range. Of course the lighter the fabric the lighter the sleeping bag or down clothing, and the less space it takes up in your rucksack. This fabric is so light it actually helps to allow even greater lofting of the down too.

Water-resistant HyperShell fabric (weight: 28 gsm)

HyperShell is PHD’s exceptionally lightweight waterproof coated fabric. This remarkable ripstop nylon provides complete windblock and good water resistance at a breath-taking weight (28 g/sm). HyperShell protects the down from condensation drips found typically in tents, tarps and snow-holes, but its very low weight allows greater lofting of the down and a smaller pack size. Hydrostatic head: 1000mm.

Note: unlike some other so-called 'proofed' fabrics, HyperShell does not rely solely on a DWR (durable water repellent) coating. Although it has a DWR coating, more importantly it has a breathable and permanent PU coating applied on the underside of the fabric that cannot be abraded through daily use, so performance is maintained over many years.

Fabric weight: 28g/m2.

1000 Fillpower Down

This rarest of all downs we reserve for the K Series. European goose down of unique quality. 1000 provides the highest warmth-for-weight performance possible from down. More on our down insulation.

Sizing

Standard clothing sizing chart

Weight shown is for medium (M) size.

The PHD Sizing Chart below is based on measurements without clothing, exactly the way you would buy a shirt, a sweater or a pair of trousers. A 42" (107cm) chest means that your bare chest uninflated measures 42". Inside Arm is measured from armpit to wrist-bone and Inside Leg from crutch to ankle bone. If you find that you fall between (or across) these sizings, please contact us and we will quote you for modifications needed. Modifications cannot be made to sale items, bargain box items or other products not offered at full price. And if you are supplying us with your measurements, it is always useful for us to know your height, even when you are only buying a jacket.

Reviews

Comments relate to our standard Alpine Ultra down jacket, which weighs 80g more:

"Alpine Ultra down jacket was definitely the "go to" piece of kit for the whole expedition. Quick on, quick off, stuff it in the pack, clip it to an anchor whilst you sort gear. Drishell is durable enough for arm rappels on fixed ropes and definitely proofed enough for high mountain conditions."
Ben Kane, Guide, Field Touring Alpine.

"Packs to nothing."
Petesy (a.k.a. Peter Macfarlane).

"It's the perfect alpine down jacket. It blows the competition out of the water. Whilst the weight is awesome, you also get a tiny packed size out of it meaning that your down jacket won't eat up half your backpack space so you can go with a small backpack (20L) and keep a light and fast rhythm to your climbing."
Jon Griffith.

"I used the Alpine Ultra Down Jacket as a belay jacket and emergency outer layer in the Indian Himalaya - I found it to be excellent. It's lighter and packs down smaller than any comparable jacket, and its warmth to weight ratio is second to none. There is no other jacket that I would've preferred to have with me."
Virgil Scott - Imperial College Reru Valley Expedition (Zanskar Himalaya, India).

"Thank you for the fantastic equipment. Everything (including the Alpine Ultra Down Jacket) was above and beyond what was required and fended off the elements perfectly."
Graham B., on a trip to Aconcagua.
