Description

Part of the Desert Race Collection, designed specifically for desert racing. From the legendary Saharan Marathon des Sables to the Kalahari’s KAEM, and the growing number of events in the Gobi, the Atacama, the Australian interior and all around the world, these events have their own particular set of challenges to overcome. Sweltering 40 degree (C) race days can give way to 4 degree (C) nights – that’s cold enough for frost – in which warmth, sleep and recovery play a vital part in preparation for the next day’s challenge.

During a multistage desert race, keeping warm to get a good night’s sleep is a prerequisite to recovery and good performance. The Desert Race Three, with a Typical Operating Temperature of 0°C, meets the needs of those who need extra insulation for expected 4°C nights, while still maintaining exceptionally light weight. The Desert Race Three is developed from our hugely popular Racebag designs. With the use of our new 7X (7 denier) fabric, it is one of the lightest sleeping bags in the world for this temperature rating. Box wall construction is used to allow maximum loft of the down over the top of the bag, while stitch-through construction reduces weight in the base. Filled with 950 fillpower down, the Desert Race Three is a serious option for all racers looking to shave every gram.

The Race Stuff Sac is a race-specific Stuff Sac with attachment points to strap to the outside of a rucksack. It can be purchased separately or added to your order as an option.

For one day only* — 6th October 2018 — we will be reducing the price of this bag by 15% to £368. 6th October is the Marathon des Sable Expo in London. Speakers include James Cracknell and Patrick Bauer - Race Director and founder of the MdS. We will be exhibiting our Desert Race Collection. *On 6th October PHD customer discount cannot be applied to this item.

Technical

Ultralight 7X fabric (weight: 22 gsm)

7X is our new sheer-light 7 denier fabric. An exquisitely fine rip-stop nylon, 7X is incredibly light, highly wind-resistant and has first-rate down proofing. This fabric helps us create the very lightest of gear in the PHD range. Of course the lighter the fabric the lighter the sleeping bag or down clothing, and the less space it takes up in your rucksack. This fabric is so light it actually helps to allow even greater lofting of the down too.

950 Fillpower Down

A newcomer to our range. European goose of rare quality. A high value alternative at the top levels of performance. More on our down insulation.

Construction

This bag has an insulating straight wall baffle system on top (no straight-through stitching). Straight wall is the lightest of all baffle sytems. In cross section it looks like this:

On the bottom stitch-through seams are used to minimise weight. More on sleeping bag construction.

Specific feedback on the Desert Race Three

"I loved it! It kept me really warm and was perfect for the Marathon des Sables. I always slept well."
Sophie Raworth (BBC newsreader)

"I bought the bag for the Racing the Planet Patagonia multiday race it because it was the lightest bag I could find and I am obsessed about cutting down every gram possible. I found it super warm which was handy as it does get quite chilly as you head towards the Andes!"
Thomas Naughton.

"I did the Marathon des Sables with the bag. I was very happy with the bag. The MdS was rather cold this year, especially at night. Lots of people were complaining about their bags, that they were cold. I, however, was warm and snug in my bag. I can only recommend my bag to everyone. It was difficult buying a sleeping bag with everything you read online. I am very happy I bought your bag."
Ruth Viane

"I used the sleeping bag during Fire+Ice Ultra, a self-supported race. The weight was very helpful for this event. The special packing system was very helpful for carrying."
Georgeta Petrescu

Testimonials from PHD Customers on the Marathon des Sables using PHD sleeping bags:

"A quick note to say how impressive my PHD bag was in the Sahara on this year's Marathon des Sables. Quite simply the best piece of kit I've ever bought. Temperature with wind got below 5 Celsius and the bag handled it so well that I slept in the buff every-night! Many, many thanks."
Ben Buckle.

"It performed brilliantly and, in a tent of eight, I was the only one to be warm during the night in just my running shorts. I will be going back in 2019 and will recommend your gear to any fellow competitors!"
Robert Bayman (MdS Competitor).

"I would, without a doubt, use the PHD bag again. Quite simply, I don't think there's a better bag on the market for warm weather stage racing."
Bryon Powell -- member of 1st American team to place in top 3 of the Marathon des Sables.

"The bag was great for Marathon des Sables and I was 8th overall and the best finish ever by an American (or English speaker from what I hear). Anyhow, I loved the bag and will recommend it."
