If you are using a shoulder-length sleeping bag without a hood, such as our GreenlandicsDeltas, or a quilt, this down-filled balaclava will keep your head and neck very warm. The balaclava is long enough to be tucked under the collar of a down or fleece jacket to keep it in place. The wrap-around face-hole cinch-cord allows the same sort of adjustment you’d find in a sleeping bag hood. Although weighing only 50 grams, and packing down to next to nothing, this balaclava can make quite the difference to your nights.

This Down Balaclava was designed at the suggestion of Russell Hann. Russell suggested:

I would love it if you produced a down-filled balaclava, not only would this work well on its own as a super-warm head layer, but when combined with a Greenlandic or Delta sleeping bag it would produce a great functional sleep system. The balaclava would cut off any breezes on the neck and also mean that the bag user could toss and turn without their head ending up facing into the hood- breathing into the down and thus introducing moisture.

Ultrashell (weight: 40 gsm)

One of the lightest of PHD's coated materials. This ripstop nylon provides complete wind block and good water resistance at minimal weight. Ultrashell gives an excellent upgrade to performance with very little weight penalty.

Ultralight 10X fabric (weight: 26 gsm)

10X, PHD's first 10 Denier Fabric. 9,000 metres of the yarn used to weave 10X weighs just 10g, that's about the same as a £1 coin! For all its thinness 10X is amazingly downproof and with reasonable care will go on giving you good service for years.

900 Fillpower Down

European goose down of very high quality. A truly excellent down with large clusters, consistent quality and lively long-term performance. More on our down insulation.
