Description:

This full-on expedition bag utilizes construction techniques and patterns from our lightweight mountaineering Hispar Sleeping bag range and shares the same Ultrashell outer as our 'K Series' version. It has a lightweight M1 inner, and uses our superb 900 fillpower down. A half length zip with double draft tube keeps the weight down (a full length zip is available as an option). A mummy hood and down filled collar maximize the performance and Ultrashell panels have been added to the inner head and foot areas to cope with damp.

The PHD Hispar Advanced Base Camp bag has a typical operating temperature of -15°C, which makes it an ideal choice for Scottish winter conditions as well as Himalayan trekking routes such as Everest Base Camp.

The Hispar Advanced Base Camp bag will fit inside our Hispar Overbag to push its Typical Operating Temperature down to -39°C.

Made to order and by hand, this bag comes with Short, Standard and Long Length options, as well as Slim, Standard and Wide Width option, so you get the perfect fit and the best possible warmth to weight ratio. And, as we are making these sleeping bags to order, you can select either Short or Full-length side-zips on the left or right sides.

Dispatch time: As with all PHD products, these are made to order and by hand. We estimate it will take us around 4 to 6 weeks to make and dispatch sale orders. During busy periods it may take a little longer.

Ultrashell (weight: 40 gsm)

One of the lightest of PHD's coated materials. This ripstop nylon provides complete wind block and good water resistance at minimal weight. Ultrashell gives an excellent upgrade to performance with very little weight penalty.

Lightweight M1 fabric (weight: 39 gsm)

Lightweight silky microfibre. This close-weave 20 denier fabric is fully downproof, but also light and flexible enough to allow the down full loft. A reliable performer that has been the basis for much of our lightweight gear for some time.

Sleeping bag zips

  • No zip: The standard design on our lightest bags with open hoods. The simplest/lightest system which is a must for adventure racers. Up to 140gm (5oz) lighter than a full zip with draft tube.
  • Full zips: Full zip bags ventilate well, so they can be used over a wider range of temperatures.
  • Short zips: Short zips are lighter and pack smaller than full zips. A short zip & draft tube is up to 85gm (3oz) lighter than the full version.
  • Our full briefing on sleeping bag zips.

900 Fillpower Down

European goose down of very high quality. A truly excellent down with large clusters, consistent quality and lively long-term performance. More on our down insulation.

Construction

This bag has an insulating straight wall baffle system throughout (no straight-through stitching). Straight wall is the lightest of all baffle systems. In cross section it looks like this:

Side V channels, and double draft tubes behind the zip optimise insulation.

More on sleeping bag construction.

Proofed inner panels

Proofed fabric (Drishell or Ultrashell) panels are included inside the hood and foot areas of the bag to help keep the down dry. In very cold temperatures your breath can cause ice to form around the face opening, which may soak into the down as it melts. The panels at the foot end are to protect the down if you get into your bag with wet socks (or in extreme situations with your boots on).

"The bag has been wonderful and has performed exactly how we would like it to. It has been used on plenty of winter wild camps in mainly the Lake District. When camping in our van, condensation can be a bit of an issue but your bag seems to resist it quite well and keep its loft. It has performed excellently, we can't think of any way to improve it. This bag is the perfect choice for use backpacking at the base of winter climbing routes in the UK."
Phil

"I thought I would let you know how pleased I am with the bag. I took it on a 5 month bicycle tour from Canada down to Mexico. Camping around 80% of the time. In fact we are going away for another year, starting April, again the bag will be going along."
Martin Neale

"The PHD Advanced Base Camp has kept me comfortably warm in the Scottish winter weather right down to the -15°C rating. Warmth to weight ratio is unrivalled at just over 1kg, it packs to a reasonably small size and lofts superbly once released from its stuff sack. Previous bags I owned have suffered from dampness around the hood and neck area due to condensation from my breath in cold conditions. However, the Drishell fabric certainly prevents the down from becoming damp and dries off quickly once wiped with a microfiber cloth before packing. This is extremely important on a multi day trip. The Drishell fabric has proved to be both versatile and durable. I love the simple but effective design of the bag and the half zip really prevents any drafts or cold spots around the zip area. I often sit in the bag on cold wild camp nights out with my Alpine Ultra jacket on and am often the envy of my cold companions."
Greg B

"I've used it for regular hiking-type camping in Scotland (often out West, Torridon way) usually in the colder months though it's also been used in the depths of winter. Overall, I regard the bag as a really good piece of gear, worth the price-tag and is a good balance for me in terms of weight (& compressibility) vs warmth. It's a good fit too. I got the long version and it's just right - I'm about medium build and about 6 foot 2 inches."
Ruaridh D

"Construction and quality is fantastic, compresses down amazingly small"
David

"How wonderful is it! Lovely and roomy over just light clothing but fits well over a lightweight sleeping bag or mid-weight down jacket as well. A true work of art. I have no doubt though that this will do for any conditions that I can get myself to. And it packs down neatly enough to fit in the bottom of a Crux AK47-X rucksack, perfect for those day trips that morph into 2-day trips."
