Peak Lenin is one of the five 7000m mountains in the old Soviet Union classified as a 'Snow Leopard Mountain' (a Soviet equivalent to the Seven Summits). Now the 7000m peak with the most frequent ascents, it remains even more popular than Mustagh Ata.

Wind chill rating: High

As a non-technical mountain with relatively easy access, the dangers of this big, 7000m+ mountain can be underestimated. Heavy snowfall and ferocious winds can increase avalanche dangers and reduce the ability of a group to move over ground. Gear needs to be selected for low temperatures at high altitudes. Back up equipment such as very substantial down mitts will be required. As usual with very high altitude mountaineering, two sleeping bags will be needed. Those recommended here are for the highest camps on the mountain. Summit attempts are made all year round but the best of the weather conditions are usually found early July to mid August. The gear selected here is for this time of year.
