Expeditions to this area face a range of environments from deep boggy jungle, plantations of Coffee beans and Bananas, to glaciated summits. Mount Stanley in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda is the third highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya and, in addition to the equipment we list, you may need to pack wellington boots along with your ice axe and crampons.

Wind chill rating: Low

Most of the year these mountains are shrouded in mist and lashed with heavy rain, sleet and snow. Thunderstorms are common. With an annual rainfall of 2,000-3000 millimetres waterproofs are essential. High mountain shell jackets and trousers are required, particularly on the glaciated summits. A series of huts built by the Mountain Club of Uganda provide overnight accommodation. The Elena hut is at 4540m. Daytime temperatures in the cloud here hover at about freezing and drop well below during the night. Full-length zips on sleeping bags will help with variations in temperatures lower down. The traditional trekking seasons are February or August and the equipment selected is for these periods.
