If ordinary mummy shaped sleeping bags don’t quite match up to your idea of comfort, our range of Greenlandic semi-rectangular bags may be just what you’re looking for. Side sleepers and those who appreciate plenty of manoeuvring space will find these roomy bags less claustrophobic, allowing the independent movement a restless sleeper prefers.

Using all the advantages gained from our exceptionally lightweight 7X fabric, and the benefits of our super high-quality 950 fill power down, these semi-rectangular bags give the efficiency of a superlight mummy sleeping bag with the ease and girth of a quilt. You’ll find no cold air creeping in and no string to set up, just the enclosed warmth, width and wriggle room for a relaxed night.

As with all PHD sleeping bags, the Greenlandic series is made to order, so we can offer plenty of options. To begin with, a combination of 4 different lengths and 4 different widths allows you to get the perfect fit. Primarily this is because poor sizing compromises insulation, but it also means that you carry only what’s necessary.

The outer fabric can be upgraded to water-resistant Ultrashell (condensation can be very heavy inside a tent or bivi) and, because dampness at the foot of a bag is so often the consequence of touching the inside of a tent, an optional waterproof foot cover can be specified for extra protection. This can be sewn on or – so you can detach it and strip the bag right down for super-minimalist overnights – we can make it stud-on: it’s up to you.

The optional fully waterproof Dri-LX outer provides an extra seam-sealed outer shell to the bag. While a shelled sleeping bag is not designed to be used alone in heavy rain (the hood area is open to the elements) the shell does protect the bag when it is used outdoors without a tent, for example in a snow-hole or under a tarp.

Ultralight 7X fabric (weight: 22 gsm)

7X is our new sheer-light 7 denier fabric. An exquisitely fine rip-stop nylon, 7X is incredibly light, highly wind-resistant and has first-rate down proofing. This fabric helps us create the very lightest of gear in the PHD range. Of course the lighter the fabric the lighter the sleeping bag or down clothing, and the less space it takes up in your rucksack. This fabric is so light it actually helps to allow even greater lofting of the down too.

Dri-LX (weight: 64 gsm)

At just 64gsm, Dri-LX is our lightest 2-layer breathable waterproof rip-stop nylon fabric. Its remarkably low weight not only makes for a lighter load, but also reduces pack size. Its excellent waterproofing qualities are in part due to how it can be taped at the seams to create a waterproof shell for sleeping bags and clothing.

Ultrashell (weight: 40 gsm)

One of the lightest of PHD's coated materials. This ripstop nylon provides complete wind block and good water resistance at minimal weight. Ultrashell gives an excellent upgrade to performance with very little weight penalty.

Sleeping bag zips

  • No zip: The standard design on our lightest bags with open hoods. The simplest/lightest system which is a must for adventure racers. Up to 140gm (5oz) lighter than a full zip with draft tube.
  • Full zips: Full zip bags ventilate well, so they can be used over a wider range of temperatures.
  • Short zips: Short zips are lighter and pack smaller than full zips. A short zip & draft tube is up to 85gm (3oz) lighter than the full version.

950 fillpower down

A newcomer to our range. European goose of rare quality. A high value alternative at the top levels of performance. More on our down insulation.

This bag has an insulating straight wall baffle system throughout (no straight-through stitching). Straight wall is the lightest of all baffle sytems. In cross section it looks like this:

More on sleeping bag construction.

"I ordered a long length and find it a real pleasure to finally have a bag that I don’t find my head poking out of in the night. It's a rare treat to feel able to carry enough kit to 'snuggle down' into, whilst still being lightweight and small enough to be of little consequence. The width gives plenty of room to move hips and legs and I don’t have the restricted feeling of other bags. It’s the best bag I've ever owned and I'm happy with it."
Matthew Geyman using a Greenlandic 400

"Worked brilliantly. Great product and did not disappoint."
Arwel Hughes using a Greenlandic 400 in Nepal

"The real plus for me is the width. Being able to wriggle around makes a huge difference to me. I’m not large but after activity, stiffness sets in and a small, tight bag can be uncomfortable. I’ve now got five PHD items now and thrilled with them all!"
Andy Heath using a Greenlandic 400
